| Umi ga Kikoeru - I can hear the Sea |
Studio Ghibli's first foray into the made-for-TV movie realm is a brilliantly portrayed youth drama about a man who goes back to his hometown for a high school reunion, who is flooded with powerful memories of friendship, romance, and other experiences. The main character travels to his hometown for his high school reunion. During the trip, he recalls the memories of the days in high school. Friendship, subtle love, a trip to Tokyo and so on all came back to him as the film evolves. Taku and his best friend Matsuo are figuring out what they'd like to do with their lives when a girl named Rikako transfers into their school. Rikako is a smart, charming and sophisticated girl who had to move away from her urban surroundings, to seashore countryside village. But she has troubles of her own. Set in Kochi on the island of Shikoku, Ocean Waves tells the story of a love triangle. Umi ga Kikoeru is a touching drama, with the subtle, quiet charm that Studio Ghibli is known for. An outsider, Tomomi Mochizuki, who also directed the first Kimagure Orange Road movie, directed the film, which is based on a novel by Himuro Saeko. The overriding theme of Ghibli films is, for the most part, nostalgia, either for an age in a person's life or a time in our shared past. In this respect, Ocean Waves is no different from its Studio Ghibli brethren. Umi Ga Kikoeru was the first Studio Ghibli production with an outside director, and it presages later director work by Yoshifumi Kondo, Yoshiyuki Momose, Hiroyuki Morita, and others. The animation is really gorgeous. Though there is nothing supernatural in the film, the blue skies, castles, and other scenery are extremely well drawn. |
