| The story of a new breed of human |
Elfen Lied is an anime series inspired to a 12-volume manga series by author Lynn Okamoto. The anime was directed by Mamoru Kanbe and designed by Seiji Kishimoto and Hiroyuki Okawa.
Elfen Lied tells the story of Diclonius, a new breed of human being born as mutants with horns growing from their skull. From a young age, their instinct is to kill many humans by use of their telekinetic abilities. They are able to control numerous vectors: basically invisible arms that can control objects, kill people and transmit virus that gave birth to them in the first place. In an accident, Lucy, a young female Diclonius, broke loose from her restraints, slaughtering the guards as she made her escape out of the laboratory. She completely lost her memory. Without memories, Lucy drifted along the Kamakura Yuigahama and here; she was chanced upon by Kouta and Yuka, two young cousins, upon the beach. Instead of speaking, she makes a cat noise, so they name her Nyu, after her sole vocabulary word, and they take her home to the immense disused restaurant of Yuka's family. When the police come looking for Lucy, calling her a missing person who needs to get back to her family, Kohta protectively denies knowing anything about her. Meanwhile, the organization that was holding and experimenting on Lucy sends soldiers to kill her.
The opening credits are hushed and arty, with a hymn like theme song and sophisticated artwork that inserts the characters into richly coloured images inspired by Gustav Klimt works. |
